Third vehicle safety checkpoint conducted this month

Police in Mahanoy Township say a vehicle safety inspection checkpoint along Burma Rd. Friday resulted in the detainment of two people suspected of being in the United States illegally.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents worked along with township police at this checkpoint. During the operation, two individuals were taken into custody by ICE officials, Mahanoy Township police say.

In addition, police say they cited other commercial vehicle operators for safety and other regulatory violations. Another traffic stop was conducted on a vehicle with what police say was illegal tinting on its windshield and a side window. The driver was charged with possessing drug paraphernalia, an expired registration, and a Glock 23 handgun, which he is allegeldy not permitted to have, police say.

The ICE arrests in Mahanoy Township are the latest two of eight made in recent weeks. Mahanoy Township is enrolled in ICE’s 287(g) Task Force model, which gives local officers limited immigration law enforcement duties.

A little less than two weeks ago, Mahanoy Township announced immigration-based arrests following incidents, including two suspected illegal immigrants found at a gathering at a nearby wind farm.

All other immigration arrests and detainments by Mahanoy Township Police or ICE officers have been at vehicle checkpoints either on Morea or Burma roads.
