Police: Schuylkill County Man Punched Victim, Choked Her With His Shirt During Domestic Violence Incident

A Pottsville man was arrested last Thursday night following what police described as a domestic violence incident.

According to information released by police in Pottsville, officers were sent to the 300 block of E. Arch St. after a person who called 9-1-1 reported seeing a woman getting hit in the face by a man.

Police arrived and encountered the alleged victim of this incident. She told police that when she came home that night, she found Jason Able-Lewis, 36, on the porch with another woman. This led to an argument that turned violent.

During the argument, Able-Lewis allegedly grabbed the victim’s phone and smashed it. The victim told police that Able-Lewis then punched her in the face “too many times to count.” He then took off his shirt, ripped it, and wrapped it around the victim’s neck.

As he had his shirt wrapped around her neck, the victim told police that she could not breathe and that she thought she was going to die.

“Significant swelling” was noted on the side of the victim’s face, police note. She had scratches on her right arm and leg, too.

Police say the couple’s child confirmed what they were hearing from the victim in regard to the confrontation.

Following questioning, Able-Lewis was taken into custody. Police say a search of his person resulted in the discovery of 178 grams of methamphetamine in two bags.

Able-Lewis has been charged with strangulation, aggravated assault, simple assault, reckless endangerment, criminal mischief, possession with intent to deliver, and possession of a controlled substance.

He was arraigned before District Magistrate Judge David Plachko, who set bail at $100,000 cash and remanded Able-Lewis to Schuylkill County Prison.

CORRECTION: The original version of this article listed the assailant’s name as Jacob, per a press release from police. It’s actually Jason.
