A Schuylkill County man has been charged with aggravated assault after police say he struck another man with his truck at a campground in the area last year.
According to charging documents filed last week, State Police-Schuylkill Haven were dispatched to the Camp-A-While Campground in Hegins Township on the evening of Aug. 10, 2024, for a report of a man driving a pickup truck erratically.
Police learned that the man behind the wheel of the truck – later identified as Myles Miller, 34, of Mar Lin, Norwegian Township – had been driving his Dodge pickup at a high speed and erratically in the wrong direction at the campground that day.
The owner of the campground reportedly told police that she was concerned for the campers’ safety because of young children being in the area. She also said she tried to get the driver to leave the campground but Miller sped away.
A State Trooper on the scene spoke with a man who said he was sitting at a picnic table talking with friends when he heard Miller’s truck coming in the opposite direction. He said the truck was moving fast but he and others in the area at the time were able to get the driver to stop, at least for a moment.
However, Miller then allegedly restarted the truck and sped away. In the process, the man who had been sitting at the picnic table prior to getting the truck to stop, was struck by the vehicle and rolled off the front bumper.
Police say the man reported no injuries other than being sore and did not request medical attention.
Witnesses to this incident were able to capture it on camera. Those images of the truck, including a partial view of the registration plate, led police to Miller. Police say Miller has previously been involved in a road rage incident.
On May 8, police say they arrived at Miller’s home to confront him about the incident last August. Miller reportedly told police that he was only driving in the wrong direction at the campground that night. About an hour later, police say Miller arrived at the Schuylkill Haven barracks for processing and drove the pickup truck suspected in the incident to the station.
Miller was arraigned before District Magistrate Judge David Rossi on May 15 and charged with aggravated assault, a first-degree felony, along with misdemeanors for simple assault and reckless endangerment, and a summary offense of harassment.
He was released on $25,000 unsecured bail. A preliminary hearing has been scheduled for June 26.
