Pottsville’s Travis Blankenhorn recorded his first start and base hit with the New York Mets Saturday night.
Mets manager Luis Rojas inserted Blankenhorn into the lineup Saturday at second base, batting 7th. And the Pottsville Area grad had a great view of the latest dominating pitching performance from Mets ace Jacob deGrom.
deGrom had 11 strikeouts and didn’t allow a run over 7 innings as New York beat San Diego, 4-0.
Blankenhorn Gets First Start, Hit with Mets
Blankenhorn had been limited to pinch hit duties since being acquired via waivers from the Seattle Mariners last week. He’d been 0-4 at the plate with a strikeout before Saturday night’s game on the West Coast.
In the top of the 2nd inning with two outs, however, Blankenhorn finally reached base safely wearing the orange and blue by smacking a two-out double to right field off Padres starter Joe Musgrove. He’d be stranded there after deGrom grounded out to end the inning.
In the top of the 4th inning, Blankenhorn struck out swinging to Musgrove with two Mets on base.
He was replaced by pinch hitter Jonathan Villar in the 6th inning as Rojas was looking for a more favorable matchup against Padres lefty relief pitcher Tim Hill.
Blankenhorn has now appeared in 4 games on consecutive days for the Mets. He’s 1-6 (.167 BA) with a double at the plate.
