National Weather Service has issued an Extreme Heat Warning for Schuylkill County and much of central Pennsylvania.
The Extreme Heat Warning goes into effect at noon on Wednesday and expires at 8 p.m. Friday. Forecasters predict Heat Index values up to 108 are expected with actual air temperatures reaching 96 degrees on Wednesday and 99 degrees on Thursday and 100 degrees on Friday.
Further, a Heat Advisory is in effect from 8 p.m. Friday until 8 p.m. Saturday, when Heat Index values could reach as high as 102.
Don’t expect any relief at night as temperatures will only drop into the low- to mid-70s through Friday night and the upper-60s through the holiday weekend.
High humidity is also expected during this time, making
NWS says the risk of heat-related illness – especially heat exhaustion and heat stroke – increases significantly during the weather expected in the coal region through the weekend.
Forecasters advise taking frequent breaks when working outdoors, finding rest in shaded or air conditioned areas. It’s also important to stay hydrated to prevent illness.
Power outages are also possible due to increased demand for electricity during this time.
