Twenty-four projects across Schuylkill County have been awarded more than $5 million in state grant funding.
The Local Share Account (LSA) grants were announced Tuesday. Money for the grants comes from casino revenue in Pennsylvania. The funding was approved by the Commonwealth Financing Authority, an agency of the state’s Dept. of Community and Economic Development.
“I am pleased to see these highly competitive funds coming back to our local communities, improving infrastructure, public facilities and public safety for local residents,” State Sen. Dave Argall says in a statement.
More than $800,000 was awarded to public works equipment across the county, including $315,250 to South Manheim Township for an excavator, $115,795 for a dump truck in East Norwegian Township, and $225,000 to Shenandoah for fleet modernization.
Roads in some areas of Schuylkill County will benefit from $700,000 in LSA money. McAdoo is getting $450,000 to repave streets and East Union Township will get $250,000 to pave nearly 2,000 feet of dirt and gravel road in Cove Village.
Hubley Township was awarded $300,000 to get an ambulance for Hegins Area Ambulance. Schuylkill County gets $200,000 for 9-1-1 site development. And Ryan Township was awarded $27,061 for a water rescue boat.
Parks and recreation projects received a little more than $100,000 in LSA funds with East Brunswick Township getting $58,200 to purchase land next to its park and Union Township was awarded more than $76,000 for tennis courts.
Some LSA funds were also given for economic development purposes. Pottsville Area Development Corp. was given $345,000 to acquired two blighted buildings on Centre St. and the City’s Redevelopment Authority will get $100,000 to fund the Schuylkill YMCA expansion at Alvernia University CollegeTowne.
