The two candidates vying to represent Schuylkill County in Congress will face each other in a debate next month.
Schuylkill Chamber of Commerce announced Monday that it’s hosting a debate between incumbent Republican Dan Meuser and Democrat challenger Rachel Wallace. The debate is set for 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 20, at Penn State-Schuylkill’s John E. Morgan Auditorium.
Meuser and Wallace will face one another in the Nov. 3 General Election. On the line is Pennsylvania’s 9th Congressional District seat in the US House of Representatives. Meuser has been in that seat since 2019.
Wallace, a Pottsville native now living in New Ringgold, released a statement on the debate after accepting the Chamber’s invitation. She’s been calling for a debate with Meuser since August.
“Dan Meuser has a lot to answer for, from his votes to raise our health care costs and to end local control on data centers to his stock portfolio outperforming Warren Buffett and Bill Gates,” she says.
“Since Dan Meuser has never held a town hall and doesn’t live in our Congressional district, this is a rare opportunity for people to actually see him and hear his explanation for why he votes against the interests of our part of Pennsylvania.
“I look forward to sharing my vision for lowering costs, fighting fraud and corruption, and bringing people together to solve local problems in this debate,” Wallace adds.
Meuser, in a statement to Coal Region Canary, says he believes the Chamber debate will allow voters to see the contrast between he and Wallace.
“I look forward to participating in the Schuylkill Chamber of Commerce’s Congressional Debate. This will be a great opportunity to discuss the results we have delivered for Pennsylvania’s 9th Congressional District, the policies we are advancing to grow our economy and strengthen our communities, and the important work still ahead. It will also give voters a clear view of the contrast between two very different paths forward for our country,” he says.
“Democrat Socialists running want to return to the days of Biden and Harris, impeach our President, tear down our Democratic Republic and build it into something unrecognizable. Yet, there is nothing democratic about socialism. So, I welcome the opportunity to make the case for continuing our work to deliver results and advance common-sense solutions for northeastern and central Pennsylvania,” Meuser adds.
The Oct. 20 debate is free and open to the public. Registration to the event is required due to limited seating. The public can register to attend through the Schuylkill Chamber of Commerce website or by phoning 570-622-1942.
