A handful of Schuylkill County fire departments came together Saturday for a first-of-its-kind softball tournament.
The Stop, Drop & Swing tournament was held at the Washington Township Teener Field on Flat Hill. Slowpitch teams from Friedensburg Fire Co., Pine Grove Fire Dept. Auburn Fire Dept., and two from Pottsville Fire Dept. participated in eight games througout the day.
In the end, it was Pine Grove that topped Friedensburg in the championship game. Trophies were awarded to the top three teams and cash prizes were handed out.

According to Kelsey Fidler, of Friedensburg Fire Co., the goal was to have companies come together to have some fun and also support a worthy cause.
“We’re always working together but never get to have fun,” she said. “We’re always asking for help but we want to give back.”
Fidler said maybe the best part of the tournament was the run up to the event. Friedensburg practiced for two months prior to Saturday, getting together once a week in preparation.
“It was nice to get together and have some fun over the summer,” she said.
Money raised from the softball tournament went to Hillside SPCA, outside Pottsville.
Fidler said she hopes to grow the event in the coming years and benefit more charities and organizations in need.
