Rain to Hold Off for Fireworks in Pottsville and Mahanoy City Tonight

Tomorrow looks iffy for big parades in Pottsville and Frackville

Fears of rain disrupting America250 fireworks displays in Schuylkill County are misplaced, says a meteorologist at National Weather Service.

John Banghoff, lead meteorologist at NWS-State College, tells Coal Region Canary, “Friday will be rain free!”

Though it will be humid and cloudy, the big fireworks shows and America250 celebrations planned in Pottsville and Mahanoy City tonight will be dry.

In Pottsville, an All-American picnic is planned for the top deck of the Capitol parking garage is scheduled to start at 6:30 p.m. This event costs $50 and includes a full menu of picnic foods and Yuengling products.

Fireworks are set to start at 9:15 p.m..

Freedom Fest kicks off tonight in Mahanoy City at West End Fire Co. & Rescue. Numerous food and other vendors will be on hand from 4-10 p.m. The band Sakes Alive will be performing from 6-10 p.m.

A fireworks display provided by Mahanoy Area Chamber of Commerce begins at dusk.

Rain Moves In Overnight, Threatens Parades in Pottsville and Frackville

The America250 festivities continue in Pottsville on Saturday with a big parade starting at 11 a.m. followed by a party at the Alvernia University parking lot from noon until 5 p.m.

Frackville is having a massive parade to celebrate its sesquicentennial at 6:30 p.m.

Unfortunately, rain may dampen those celebrations a bit. However, both parades are happening rain or shine.

Banghoff says Saturday will start wet with widespread showers in the morning.

“Scattered showers and storms are a good bet during the afternoon,” he adds.

However, Saturday afternoon will NOT be a total washout with the potential for some breaks in the showers in the afternoon.

The good news here: the cloudy sky and somewhat wet conditions will keep temps in the 70s much of the day. That’ll be welcome news if you happen to look at any extended forecasts for next week, when temps could get into the upper 90s.
