Schuylkill County Man Charged for Crash That Seriously Injured Woman

Victim suffered a broken hand, police say

A Schuylkill County man faces a felony charge after police say he caused a three-vehicle crash in Shenandoah while driving with a suspended license. The crash resulted in one driver suffering a serious injury.

Randall Tyson, 81, of Gilberton, is charged with felony accidents involving injury while not licensed, alongside misdemeanor counts for driving with a suspended license and operating a vehicle without a required ignition interlock.

Police in Shenandoah say the crash occurred shortly after 3:30 p.m. on May 7 at the intersection of Route 924, aka the Gold Star Highway, and the Gold Star Plaza.

Tyson was driving a 2008 silver Mercury Mariner northbound and attempted to turn left into the plaza when he collided with an oncoming 2024 Ford Expedition. A third vehicle, a 2017 Hyundai Elantra, was also involved in the collision.

The driver of the Expedition was injured and taken by Shenandoah Community Ambulance to Geisinger/St. Luke’s Hospital in Orwigsburg for treatment after she had to be removed from her vehicle, police say. The victim later reported suffering a broken left hand that would be incapacitated for an extended period, police say. The driver of the Hyundai was not injured.

Following the crash, Tyson could not produce a driver’s license, police say. Tyson admitted to police that his operating privileges were suspended, that his vehicle was not equipped with a required ignition interlock device, and that he was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.

A review of Tyson’s driving record revealed five previous convictions for DUI-related driving under suspension and three prior ignition interlock violations, police say.

Tyson also faces summary traffic offenses for an improper left turn and failing to use a safety belt, police say. A preliminary hearing before Magisterial District Judge Anthony Kilker is scheduled for June 25.
