Minersville Police Department is teaming up with local student Aaliyah Rosado for “Aaliyah’s Cause,” a community-focused food drive to benefit area residents in need.
The idea took root earlier this year when Aaliyah arranged an interview with Minersville Police Chief Jeffrey Bowers. During the interview, Aaliyah said she wanted to organize a project for her community.
Bowers says he’s known Aaliyah’s family for many years, including her mother, Christina.
He reached out to Minersville borough councilman Terry Raffety, who is very involved with Salvation Army in Pottsville. Together, they came up with the idea of organizing a food drive, collecting canned goods and non-perishable food items.
Donations are currently being accepted around the clock at the Minersville Police Department, 15 N. Delaware Ave., through May 9.
After the collection period ends, all donated items will be delivered to the Salvation Army’s Food for the Body & Soul Café in Pottsville, where free hot meals are provided to those in need every Friday at noon.
But Aaliyah’s Cause does not stop with just the food drive. Wanting to do more, Aaliyah says she wants to be involved in meal prep at Salvation Army and serving those in need.
