Penn State Schuylkill will host its annual Veterans Day ceremony at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 10, at the Veterans Memorial adjacent to campus. The event is free and open to the public.
The ceremony will bring together campus and community members to recognize and honor the service and sacrifices of military veterans.
“Each year, this ceremony gives us an opportunity to come together as a community to recognize the men and women who have served our country and to express our gratitude for their sacrifices,” said Lisa M. Cecchini, financial aid and veterans benefits coordinator at Penn State Schuylkill and event organizer. “We welcome everyone to join us as we honor our veterans and reflect on the meaning of their service.”
Robert E. Bohrer II, chancellor of Penn State Schuylkill, will offer welcoming remarks. Mike Verhagen, campus registrar, will serve as master of ceremonies.
The program will include a raising of the colors by the Pine Grove Area High School Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC), followed by a performance of the national anthem by Janelle Gruber, lecturer and program coordinator in corporate communication. Verhagen will lead the Pledge of Allegiance, and the Rev. Shawn D. Van Dyke, pastor of First United Church of Christ, will offer the invocation.
Featured speakers will include Anastasia Rakowsky, a Penn State Schuylkill corporate communications student and U.S. Army veteran who served as a public affairs mass communications specialist, and Maya Jenkins, a Schuylkill Haven Area High School student and member of the school’s Veterans Committee.
The ceremony also will include acknowledgments and honors presented by Schuylkill Haven American Legion Post 38, Veterans of Vietnam, and the Pine Grove Area High School JROTC. Jenkins will perform “Taps” to conclude the program.
Community members are encouraged to attend and take part in this annual opportunity to honor those who have served.
