The remnants of Hurricane Isaias will soak Schuylkill County on Sunday, with about 1 to 1.5 inches of rain expected across the county before the storm moves out early Monday.
The totals are nearly the same from one end of the county to the other, though northern Schuylkill may get slightly less rain, according to the National Weather Service-State College forecast issued Saturday afternoon.
A few light showers could reach most of the county before dawn Sunday. Steady rain is expected to arrive around 8 a.m. Sunday and fall through the day. Rain is likely to continue Sunday night, adding another quarter to half an inch. A thunderstorm on Sunday evening is not out of the question, forecasters say.
Flooding problems beyond isolated ponding where storm drains back up is not expected from rain on Sunday. The recent dry spell should help the ground soak up much of the rain.
East winds will gust to around 30 mph Sunday and into Sunday evening, strongest at higher elevations around Frackville, Mahanoy City, and McAdoo, before calming after midnight. No watches, warnings or advisories were in effect for Schuylkill County as of Saturday afternoon.
Sunday will be cool and gray. Highs will reach only the upper 50s in the county’s higher towns, including 57 in McAdoo and 58 in Frackville, and the low 60s elsewhere, topping out around 64 in Pine Grove. Lows Sunday night will hold between 55 and 59.
Isaias came ashore Friday night along the western Florida Panhandle, east of Pensacola. The National Hurricane Center measured its top winds at 110 mph, a strong Category 2, as it neared the coast. The storm weakened quickly over Alabama and is expected to cross West Virginia on Sunday before falling apart by Monday morning, according to the Weather Prediction Center.
The rain should wind down very early Monday, with only a slight chance of a leftover shower before about 9 a.m. Skies will turn partly sunny by afternoon, with highs from 65 to 72 across Schuylkill County. Tuesday looks even nicer, mostly sunny with a high near 74 in Pottsville.
