Food trucks are coming to Martz Hall on Monday, Nov. 9, for a festival that raises money for the Pottsville Area High School program that rewards students for good behavior.

The 10th annual Pottsville Area High School PBIS Food Truck Festival runs from noon to 7 p.m. in the Martz Hall lower parking lot. It’s open to the public.

Numerous food trucks are scheduled to attend: La Casita, Messy Pig BBQ Company, Uncle Paul’s Stuffed Pretzels, Mr. Yum Yum Grill and BBQ, Huey’s Funnel Cakes, Trisha’s Treats, Cousin’s Maine Lobster, Pat’s Pierogie and Potato Pancake Truck, and PA Proud Food Truck. Pioneer Pole Buildings, Inc. is also listed on the event flyer.

All proceeds go to the high school’s Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports program, known as PBIS.

PBIS is a framework schools across the country use to teach and encourage good behavior instead of only punishing bad behavior. Schools set clear expectations for students, teach them directly, and reward students who meet them. Support comes in three tiers. The first applies to every student in the building. The second gives extra help to small groups of students who need it, and the third offers individual support for students with the greatest needs.

At Pottsville Area, the program focuses on positive behavior, respect, responsibility, and school pride, according to Erin Tranquillo, of the high school’s learning support staff, who reached out on behalf of the school’s PBIS team.

Students learn what’s expected of them in classrooms, hallways, the cafeteria, at school events, and elsewhere in the school community. The school reinforces those expectations with incentives, rewards, activities, and special events throughout the year. It all builds to the Crimson Carnival in the spring.

Tranquillo said fundraisers like the food truck festival pay for those incentives and activities.

“It also helps build connections between PAHS and our community,” she said in an email.

The school says Pottsville Area is the only high school in Schuylkill County recognized at all three tiers of PBIS supports.

“We are committed to maintaining a positive school culture where every student feels valued,” Tranquillo said. “We believe this program has made a positive difference for both students and staff since its implementation 10 years ago.”
