PPL Price to Compare Rising 10% for Homes, Dipping for Small Businesses

PPL rates change Dec. 1

PPL Electric residential customers who don’t shop for a supplier will pay about 10% more for the supply side of their bills starting Dec. 1, while small businesses will see a slight drop.

The new Price to Compare rates still need approval from the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission.

The new rates, if approved:

  • Residential: 14.428¢ per kWh (up from 13.079¢ per kWh)
  • Small business: 12.335¢ per kWh (down from 12.748¢ per kWh)

That’s an increase of about 10.3% for residential customers. For a home using 1,000 kWh a month, it works out to roughly $13.49 more each month on the supply portion of the bill.

Small business customers will see a decrease of about 3.2%.

The Price to Compare, PPL’s default rate, is what customers pay for electricity supply if they get it through PPL rather than a competitive supplier. PPL says the rate covers both the cost of buying electricity from suppliers and the transmission costs of moving it across the regional high-voltage grid.

PPL does not produce electricity or own power plants. Under state law, the utility buys power through a PUC-approved plan and passes the cost on to customers.

PPL is encouraging customers to use the Price to Compare as a benchmark when reviewing supplier offers at papowerswitch.com, and to check whether a rate is fixed or variable, how long the contract runs, and whether there are cancellation fees.

Residential customers can find budget billing, PPL Alerts, energy efficiency tips and rebates, and payment assistance programs through the company’s Bill Toolkit. Business customers can find options at pplelectric.com/business.

PPL typically adjusts the Price to Compare twice a year.
