Shapiro Cruises to Second Term as Pennsylvania Governor

Shapiro wins second term

Gov. Josh Shapiro has won a second term.

The Associated Press called the race for the Democrat over Republican state Treasurer Stacy Garrity at 8:01 p.m. Tuesday, a minute after polls closed across Pennsylvania. Lt. Gov. Austin Davis was reelected with him on the Democratic ticket. Libertarian Ken Krawchuk was also on the ballot.

“Pennsylvania, with your vision and your votes, you declared that we are ready to keep getting stuff done and moving this Commonwealth forward,” Shapiro said in a statement released by his campaign.

Shapiro, who said he “could not be more humbled and grateful for the opportunity to keep serving as your Governor,” spent election night with supporters at the Penn Harris Hotel near Harrisburg.

Manuel Bonder, Shapiro’s communications director, called the result “a remarkable outcome in a state Donald Trump won by over 120,000 votes 2 years ago.”

Garrity had not posted a statement on the outcome to her campaign website as of 9:30 p.m. In a post on X shortly after polls closed, she thanked everyone who voted, volunteered, knocked doors, made calls, or supported her campaign.

“I’m forever grateful to the thousands of Pennsylvanians who joined us on this journey,” Garrity wrote. “It’s been the honor of a lifetime.”

Garrity, an Army Reserve veteran in her second term as state Treasurer, was endorsed by President Donald Trump in January. She was expected to spend election night with supporters at a golf course in Tunkhannock.

Shapiro was first elected in 2022, when he beat Republican Doug Mastriano by about 15 percentage points. He ran this year on what he called “getting sh** done” in his first term, pointing to education funding, tax cuts, and economic development.

Pennsylvania governors are limited to two consecutive terms. Shapiro’s second term begins in January.

SCHUYLKILL COUNTY RESULTS: After the first update from Schuylkill County Election Bureau, it appears local voters favored Garrity, who held a 7,232 to 5,131 vote margin with 77 precincts left to count.
