Catch up on stories you may have missed from the past week.

It was a very busy news week here in Schuylkill County.

And it figures to be even busier in the days ahead.

But before we get there, let’s take a quick look back at some of the things you may have missed, in our ICYMI Schuylkill County News Review.

News

The biggest story of the week has to be out of Cass Township, and the controversy surrounding that community after supervisors there voted in May to disband the police force.

Questions still surround the $575 that was allegedly missing from the police evidence room and was somehow found this week during a sweep by an investigator from the District Attorney’s Office.

In the past week, State Police received an arrest warrant for a former Tremont Township Treasurer accused of stealing more than $22,000 through the use of the township’s credit card and writing checks to herself by forging signatures of two supervisors:

During his report to Borough Council, St. Clair Mayor Richard Tomko accused several members of the board of conducting borough business and conspiring on votes through a private group text chain:

Fresh off his 2-for-3 record in court, Bobby Weaver Jr. hosted another Free Beer event in Pottsville over the weekend. This time, the event was aimed at drawing attention to the city’s controversial ban on feeding stray animals:

On Tuesday, Minersville Borough Council named Jeffrey Bowers as the town’s new Chief of Police following the retirement of Michael Combs, who served in that role since 2009.

Nearly two-thirds of Schuylkill County remains to see moderate drought conditions:

Police & Fire

On Saturday morning, a home in Porter Township, just outside Tower City, was destroyed by fire:

A Philadelphia man is facing a raft of charges following a vehicle pursuit that ended on the Pottsville-Minersville highway earlier this year. During the chase, the man allegedly dropped a bag containing a pound of meth from his vehicle:

Brendon Brown, of Mahanoy City, was charged in the death of another Mahanoy City man after he allegedly sold him a fatal dose of fentanyl earlier this year:

A Frackville man is facing charges after he allegedly pulled a gun on a vehicle in a road rage incident in St. Clair:

Scrap metal thefts continue to be an issue in the area. We had a few cases come through the court system in the last week or so, including one involving a man in a wig.

A Pottsville man was sentenced in federal court this past week for his role in an armed home invasion robbery in Mahanoy City back in 2020:

A Mary D woman was sent to Schuylkill County Prison after she allegedly assaulted a pair of State Troopers during a trespassing arrest:

A truck driver from New Jersey had to be airlifted to Hershey Medical Center following a crash in Tremont Township:

Community

One town around here that always celebrates Independence Day the right way is Port Carbon. That includes its annual parade:
