4th of July in Schuylkill County Gets Off to Running Start

A parade and fireworks are to follow in Port Carbon.

Several hundred people (and a few dogs) participated in the traditional start to Independence Day in Schuylkill County … the Firecracker 5K race in Port Carbon.

Racers took their marks at 8 a.m. Thursday from Miller Playground.

A circuitous route through Port Carbon and a portion of Palo Alto wound them back to the playground for the finish.

The Firecracker 5K is the first in a series of 4th of July events in Port Carbon.

A parade follows at 10 a.m. and it all leads up to the borough’s annual fireworks display starting after it gets dark.

Thomas Corbin, 19, of Fleetwood, was the first to cross the finish line of this morning’s 5K, followed by Joshua Wagner, 18, of Oley; Wyatt Leitzel, 18, of Hegins; Ben Behm, 23, of Birdsboro; and Aiden Igielski, 15, of Robesonia.

The top female finishers were Brandi Boyer, 14, of Port Carbon; Adra Scholl, 20, of St. Clair; Anna Schaeffer, 17, of Auburn; Ashley Schappe, 28, of Schuylkill Haven; and Kaylee Senglar, 18, of Barnesville.
