Schuylkill County schools were recently awarded nearly $2.2 million in School Safety and Mental Health grant funding through the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency.
The state program provides funds to help schools make facility security improvements and expand student access to mental health resources.
“These grants will help our local schools strengthen security, address behavioral health needs and create safer learning environments for students and staff. Investing in the safety and well-being of our students is an investment in the future of our communities,” State Rep. Tim Twardzik said.
Rep. Dane Watro emphasized the necessity of safe learning environments for students.
“Parents send their children to school trusting they will be safe, cared for and given every opportunity to succeed,” he said. “These grants will help our school districts strengthen security and provide support for students facing mental health challenges. This is a meaningful investment in our children, teachers and communities.”
Rep. JoAnne Stehr added, “Investing in school safety means giving educators and students the tools and support they need to learn and succeed in a secure environment. These grants will help our local schools address important safety and behavioral health needs.”
State Sen. Dave Argall added that safe classrooms remain vital across all schools.
“Every student and educator deserves to feel safe at school,” he said. “I am pleased this highly competitive funding was awarded to our local schools.”
Under the state program, each school district receives a base allocation of $100,000. Program administrators calculate additional funding using each district’s adjusted average daily membership. Recipients can use the funds for physical security enhancements, behavioral health supports, or both.
The 15 Schuylkill County recipients and their grant allocations are:
- Blue Mountain School District: $204,984
- Gillingham Charter School: $70,000
- Mahanoy Area School District: $151,773
- Minersville Area School District: $148,329
- North Schuylkill School District: $193,211
- Pine Grove Area School District: $164,592
- Pottsville Area School District: $208,325
- Saint Clair Area School District: $135,528
- Schuylkill Haven Area School District: $149,236
- Schuylkill IU 29: $70,000
- Schuylkill Technology Centers: $70,000
- Shenandoah Valley School District: $157,632
- Tamaqua Area School District: $190,815
- Tri-Valley School District: $137,998
- Williams Valley School District: $144,078
(Note: Hazleton Area School District, which some Schuylkill County students attend, received $663,802. Panther Valley School District received $190,682.)
