Smeltz Announces Candidacy for Magisterial District Judge in Schuylkill County

Smeltz throws hat in ring in District 21-3-04

Travis Smeltz has announced his candidacy for Magisterial District Judge in Schuylkill County District 21-3-04.

A Hegins native, Smeltz has spent decades in roles focused on security, accountability, and public service, according to a statement from his campaign. His career includes experience in federal law enforcement, private security, and community development.

Smeltz began his law enforcement career at the U.S. Penitentiary in Lewisburg and the Federal Correctional Institution in Minersville. Following the 9/11 terrorist attacks, he joined the Federal Air Marshal Service, where he served for 20 years in national security operations. As an undercover agent with a top-secret security clearance, Smeltz worked to detect and prevent foreign and domestic threats. He currently serves as a director of the Air Marshal Association, advocating for federal agents before Congress.

Beyond his federal service, Smeltz says he has remained active in public safety and local business. He founded two businesses in Schuylkill County—one focused on security and private investigation, and the other continuing his family’s excavating and hauling business. He also serves on the Schuylkill County Zoning and Planning Commission and has been involved in charitable efforts, youth sports programs, and disaster relief initiatives.

“Schuylkill County has always been my home, and I knew I wanted to raise my family here,” Smeltz said. “With over 5 million miles flown in service to our country, I bring a worldwide view with a community focus, combining global experience with a deep commitment to our local values.”

Raised in Hegins, Smeltz grew up working for his father’s local excavating business, Dale Smeltz Excavating. His early experiences in motocross, boxing, wrestling, and mixed martial arts instilled in him discipline and self-reliance—qualities he says will inform his approach to the bench.

Smeltz says he has completed the required coursework and certification to serve as Magisterial District Judge. He emphasized that his experience in law enforcement and his work in the community have prepared him to make impartial and informed judicial decisions.

Smeltz resides in Hegins Township with his wife and family.

District 21-3-04 covers Barry, Branch, Cass, Eldred, Foster, Frailey, Hegins, Hubley, Pine Grove, Porter, Reilly, Tower City, Tremont, Upper Mahantongo, Washington, and Wayne townships and Pine Grove, Tower City and Tremont boroughs.
