The Pottsville Parking Authority announced Thursday that it is making on-street parking dowtown free starting next Friday and through Christmas.
Free parking downtown will go into effect after 5 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 13 and go through Christmas Day. Additionally, the Arch St. parking lot and the Mahantongo parking garage will also be free of charge.
The Parking Authority will continue to enforce parking rules at places that are completely full with municipal permit holders, including the lot at the former Ramada hotel, the Garfield Diner, John Pott lot, and the Capitol Parking Deck.
“Unsafe parking,” the Parking Authority says, will continue to be enforced during this free parking bonanza.
This is the first time in at least five years that the Parking Authority has relaxed enforcement of some parking in downtown Pottsville during the Christmas season, the Authority says.
“It’s an opportunity for us to showcase the community for the holidays,” executive director Ian Lipton says.
