Pottsville City Councilman Mark Atkinson is expected to be appointed the next Mayor at a swearing-in ceremony on Wednesday at City Hall.
The city sent out a press release on Tuesday morning making the announcement.
Third-class City code in Pennsylvania requires that remaining members of a City Council hold a public vote ahead of the appointment of a vacated Mayor’s position.
Atkinson will fill the unexpired term of Dave Clews, who resigned as Mayor due to health reasons earlier this month.
That term runs until the end of 2025, meaning Atkinson will have to run for the Mayor’s seat next year if he wants to stay in that role.
Atkinson’s appointment to the Mayor’s seat also leaves a void on City Council. The four members of Council will have 30 days to vote on a replacement to fill the void left by Atkinson’s switch to the Mayor’s seat.
That seat will also be up for election in 2025.
