Primary Day Signals End to Brutal GOP Commissioner Race

The mailers finally stop (for now) …

It feels like the race for the two Republican nominations for Schuylkill County Commissioner has been going on for several years.

In a lot of ways, it has.

But today, voters across Schuylkill County finally get their say as they head to the polls to cast their votes in this hotly contested race.

A total of 8 Republicans are vying for just 2 nominations awarded after today’s vote. That includes the 2 incumbent candidates: Boots Hetherington and George Halcovage.

Since 2020, both incumbents have come under varying degrees of criticism and public backlash. That’s led to the crowded field of 8 candidates, 6 of whom believe they can do a better job as County Commissioner than the current set.

Those contenders include:

  • Maria Casey
  • Larry Padora
  • Jeff Dunkel
  • Mary Jo Moss
  • Ray Jones
  • Dan Evans

You can follow along with the latest updates throughout Election Day by following our live post with any breaking news and other takes all day and night.

Aside from that race, there are several other votes we’re closely monitoring throughout the day and night.

Court of Common Pleas: Bill Burke and Mike O’Pake have cross-filed for a spot on the Court bench. A sweep by either candidate paves their way to a likely victory in November’s General Election.

School boards: Voters in the following school districts also have big choices on their hands today as they’ll pick school directors that will represent each party in November. Here are the races that have more candidates than nominations available:

Municipal races: There are way too many empty ballots for people in Schuylkill County, especially when it comes to offices for borough council, township supervisor, and other key roles in local government.

However, there are several contested races on ballots in the county. Here’s where voters have a choice to make today:

  • Butler Township
  • Cass Township
  • Deer Lake
  • East Union Township
  • Mahanoy City
  • New Philadelphia
  • Rush Township
  • Schuylkill Haven
  • Shenandoah
  • St. Clair
  • Tremont Township
