Movement at T102 Radio, But Still No Word on RC

t102 80s day

The news that local radio DJ “RC” no longer worked at T102 radio shocked a lot of people.

Some expressed disbelief. Others seemed happy. And there are some who suspect they know the reason behind the sudden departure.

Either way, the local radio airwaves sound a little different these days. But they are still taking requests for the mid-day show, so get them in now.

The RC Era at T102 Radio

RC was on the air for quite a while. And we heard from a lot of people on it.

There are even some people out there walking among us who can only remember a T102 radio with RC. Others remember the T102 before him.

Well, he’s out and we’re still left in the dark as to the reason behind his departure.

But it appears the station is moving on somewhat.

They’ve made some recent moves we noticed while scoping out the scuttlebutt on the RC exit.

Dave Smith Promoted to Pottsville Broadcasting Co. Program Director

In an announcement today, Pottsville Broadcasting Co. promoted Dave Smith to the position of Program Director. He’s been with the company for 17 years. And technically, this is a promotion but it’s also a piling on of responsibilities there. Smith also serves as an on-air personality and holds several other executive-level positions at the station.

Smith previously worked in radio at WPAM (Pottsville) and WYNS (Lehighton).

In addition to that, there’s also another social media profile attached to the station that’s solely into promoting events through T102, at least for now.

The Challenge of Radio Today

It’s obvious that local radio faces a big challenge these days. The homogenization of it by big corporate players like iHeartRadio and ClearChannel or whatever they all are now has taken the locality and a lot of the fun out of listening to the radio.

You kinda know you’re getting what everyone else is listening to.

That was the fun of T102 radio back in the day. It’s often the most ridiculed local station but people know they don’t like it because they listen to it. They know they don’t like the songs they play because they’re listening to it.

And that’s the struggle today for radio stations. How do you get people to listen to it even if people don’t like it?

How does T102 or any station appeal to a mass audience that’s got numerous ways of listening to music on their own terms without the help of a local DJ?

One way to be competitive today at a local terrestrial level is truly delivering local content, from local news to playing locally produced music as well.

Meh. Throwing our hands in the air and blaming the internet sounds A LOT simpler.

I miss that cute little spinner Paula Parez. She had a bubbly personality and was a nice girl.
