A Schuylkill County woman was arrested Saturday afternoon after she allegedly entered a deceased man’s residence in Branch Township and fled when confronted by a caretaker.
State Police say they responded shortly after 1 p.m. to a home on Dowdentown Rd. for a report of an unwanted woman inside the residence.
A witness, who is caring for the property of her deceased brother, told police she arrived at the home and found the rear door slightly open. She reported seeing a flashlight moving inside, according to police. When the witness opened the door, she saw a woman and asked what she was doing, at which point the suspect fled out the back door, police say.
State Police later observed the suspect – identified as Brittany George, 39, of Minersville – walking on Sunbury St. in Minersville. Police say George admitted she was inside the residence and fled when the witness approached her.
Following her arrest, George reportedly told police she entered the home through the rear door because she wanted to “reminisce.” She allegedly stated a friend had told her the homeowner was deceased, though she admitted she did not know the man personally.
Inside the home, police say they observed a large amount of boxes, other goods, and loose cash on the floor. A search of George yielded $56 in cash in her pockets, police say.
George was arraigned before Magisterial District Judge Stephen Bayer on felony counts of burglary and criminal trespass as well as a misdemeanor count of theft. Bayer set bail at 10% of $10,000 and remanded George to Schuylkill County Prison. Cash bail was posted on Monday. A preliminary hearing before Magisterial District Judge Christian Lengel is scheduled for May 7.
