Proposed Bill Would End Ban on Sunday Vehicle Sales in Pennsylvania

One of PA’s last remaining Blue Laws

A Democratic lawmaker from Bucks County is reviving an effort to repeal Pennsylvania’s ban on Sunday car sales.

State Rep. Tim Brennan (D-29) is circulating a co-sponsorship memo among his colleagues in the Pennsylvania House, seeking support for legislation that would allow licensed car dealers in the Commonwealth to operate and finalize vehicle sales on Sundays.

“If you head to a car dealership on a Sunday in Pennsylvania with the hope of coming home with a new vehicle, you’re out of luck,” Brennan writes in the memo, calling the prohibition one of the state’s few remaining “Blue Laws.”

According to Brennan, most other states have already lifted similar restrictions, and Pennsylvania’s policy leaves local dealerships at a competitive disadvantage.

“Most of Pennsylvania’s neighbors allow Sunday vehicle sales at car dealerships. Therefore, by prohibiting these sales, we lose out on transactions and put our Commonwealth at a competitive disadvantage,” Brennan writes.

The proposed legislation would authorize car dealerships to remain open and legally execute vehicle sales contracts on Sundays. Brennan’s memo notes that Pennsylvania has rolled back other Blue Laws in recent years — most notably in 2016, when Fine Wine & Good Spirits stores were permitted to begin Sunday alcohol sales.
