Schuylkill County Man Allegedly Hits Woman in the Face with Beer Bottle

A Schuylkill county man was jailed on an aggravated assault charge after he allegedly struck a woman in the face with a beer bottle.

According to court documents, John Charles Jr., 45, of Shenandoah, was sent to Schuylkill County Prison over the weekend after police say he hit a woman in the face with a beer bottle after she refused to give him a ride home from the bar.

Police were called to Five Star Bar on W. Centre St. in Shenandoah for a report of an assault shortly after 11 pm. on July 12. At the bar, police say they spoke with the victim of Charles’ alleged attack.

The victim reportedly told police that she agreed to give Charles a ride to the bar but would not be driving him home.

At the bar, Charles asked the victim for a ride home. She said no and that apparently angered Charles to the point that he struck her in the face with a beer bottle.

Police say the victim suffered a cut near her right eye. They suggested the victim go to the hospital to have the cut closed with stitches.

Charles had left the scene by the time police arrived. When police went to Charles’ home, he was not there at the time but did show up as they were leaving.

He was arraigned before Magisterial District Judge Anthony Kilker and charged with aggravated assault, simple assault, harassment, and reckless endangerment. Kilker set bail at 10% of $25,000 cash.

Charles was initially remanded to Schuylkill County Prison but was bailed out on July 14. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Thursday.
