Schuylkill Haven council members unanimously adopted an ordinance last week that addresses safety concerns at one partricularly dangerous Route 61 intersection.
Under the new rule, motorists on Garfield Ave. can no longer make left turns or drive straight across Route 61 to reach the opposite side of Garfield Ave. Drivers turning from S. Garfield Avenue can only turn right onto Route 61-South, while drivers turning from N. Garfield Ave. can only head north on the highway.
The ordinance prevents motorists from cutting through two lanes of oncoming traffic on Route 61
The move follows a 90-day trial period that council initially approved on July 15, to test the right-turn-only restriction and evaluate whether it remedied the dangerous intersection.
