An 18-year-old Pottsville woman was killed Wednesday night when the car she was riding in spun into the path of a tractor-trailer on Burma Road, State Police say.
State Police-Frackville identified the victim as Alexandria Womer. She was in the front passenger seat of a 2005 Chevrolet Malibu and died at the scene, police say in newly released information. Four other people in the car were hurt, three of them minors.
The crash happened around 8:15 p.m. on Burma Rd., north of Firetower Rd. in Blythe Township, police said Thursday. Investigators say the Malibu was headed west and a 2014 Kenworth tractor-trailer was headed east. Police say the driver of the Malibu – identified as 19-year-old Martin Malis, of Pottsville – was negotiating a left curve when he lost control, and the car rotated 90 degrees and crossed into the oncoming lane directly in front of the truck. The tractor-trailer then struck the passenger side of the car, according to police. Both vehicles came to rest in the eastbound lane.
Malis suffered suspected serious injuries and was taken by Ryan Township Emergency and Rescue Squad to Lehigh Valley Hospital-East in Pottsville.
A 17-year-old Pottsville boy suffered suspected serious injuries and was taken to Lehigh Valley Hospital-Cedar Crest. A 16-year-old Pottsville boy also suffered suspected serious injuries and was taken by medical helicopter to Geisinger Medical Center in Danville. A 14-year-old Port Carbon boy suffered suspected minor injuries and was taken to St. Luke’s Miners Campus in Coaldale.
Police say all five people in the car were wearing lap and shoulder belts. State Police did not release any information about the driver of the tractor-trailer. Coal Region Canary is following up with State Police to obtain that information. Information released thus far also indicates police suspect the crash was DUI-related. However, no further details were released on that either.
The crash remains under investigation.
Ryan Township Fire Department, multiple EMS agencies, the State Police Troop L CARS unit and the Troop L Forensic Services Unit, and local police and local fire police assisted at the scene.
