Council Trying New Turning Rule at Dangerous Route 61 Intersection

Trial period will last 90 days

Motorists will only be able to turn right onto Route 61 from a dangerous intersection it has with one street in Schuylkill Haven.

On Wednesday, council members voted unanimously to approve a trial term in which only right turns from Garfield Ave. onto Route 61 will be allowed. The trial term is 90 days.

Currently, if drivers want to turn left – to go north on the highway from S. Garfield Ave. and south from N. Garfield Ave. – they have to cross two very busy lanes of traffic.

Signs will be posted to notify motorists of this new rule. At the end of this trial period, if it proves successful in remedying the dangerous situation, Schuylkill Haven will have to advertise an ordinance to make the change permanent.
