No community in Schuylkill County seems to celebrate the Fourth of July more than Port Carbon. And this year was definitely no different.
After starting the morning with an arduous Firecracker 5K, the borough’s annual Baby Parade continued a tradition dating back to 1947, nearly 80 years.
For the parade, parents decorate strollers or motorized cars in patriotic flair, some gussy up trailers attached to pickup trucks for mini floats, and older kids attach streamers and other red, white, and blue accoutrements to their bicycles and make their way past hundreds of spectators along the parade route.
Local civic groups, businesses, and first responders also participate. Pottsville’s Third Brigade Band provided some lively patriotic music along the way, too.
This year seemed to have more participation than in recent years as Port Carbon not only celebrated Independence Day but also America’s semiquincentennial. Organizers say plans are already in the works for 2027, when Port Carbon celebrates its own dodransbicentennial, or 175th year since its founding.
