Pottsville’s Lasting Legacy committee recently accepted a $25,000 donation from the estate of late Mayor John D.W. Reiley.
The money will be used to repair the steps at Yuengling Bicentennial Park at 10th & Mahantongo/Norwegian streets. Reiley was one of the founding members of the city’s Lasting Legacy committee.
Committee member Jerry Enders explained that the donation from the Reiley family “could not have come at a better time” due to the repairs needed at the park. He said Womer Landscaping Inc. donated all the labor for the repairs but it was on the city to pay for the materials necessary.
“The contribution from John Reiley’s estate really makes a difference. It’s going to be well used,” Enders said.
Hugh Reiley, the late Mayor’s son, was on hand at a small ceremony at Discovery Park in downtown Pottsville, to make the donation on behalf of the estate. He told Coal Region Canary, “Lasting Legacy meant a lot to him. The city of Pottsville meant a lot to him. My dad always loved the city. This donation is just a small token of his love toward the city and all the people that live here.”
The former Mayor Reiley passed away in August 2025 at the age of 89. Reiley served as mayor from 2000 until 2014. He succeeded his late-son Terence as Pottsville Mayor.
Lasting Legacy is encouraging residents to start making use of the parks in Pottsville, especially Bicentennial Park and Discovery Park. Spaces like Bicentennial Park are available to rent for special occassions and events, the committee said.
