The Miners 1928 hotel in downtown Pottsville is officially open for business.
Over the weekend, it hosted its first wedding on Saturday night and opened the doors at the Company Store Cafe and Lounge 28 to the public for the first time on Sunday. Rooms at the hotel are available now.
Opening the doors to the public this weekend marked the completion of a renovation of the former Miners Bank building on S. Centre St. in Pottsville, which is most known for its ornate wrought iron doors and impressive lobby area. Work on the project began a little more than one year ago.
“It took 375 days but we’re here,” owner Bill Metzinger said Sunday.
At its launch, the Company Store Cafe will be open from 6 a.m. until 10 p.m. on weekdays and from 7 a.m. until 10 p.m. on weekends. It offers a light fare for breakfast and lunch and menus will expand once more of the hotel’s kitchen comes online in about a month, Metzinger says.
The cafe features grab-and-go selections as well. And it serves Starbucks coffee drinks.
Lounge 28, the full-service bar inside the hotel lobby, is open from 4-10 p.m. Monday through Thursday, from 4 p.m until midnight on Fridays, from 11 a.m. until midnight on Saturdays and from 11 a.m. until 10 p.m. on Sundays.
The bar features a wine list, signature cocktail and mocktail menus, and bottled and draft beers.
Both the cafe and bar are open to the public as well as hotel guests. Miners 1928 has 30 hotel rooms available for overnight guests.
The highlight of the renovation of the former bank is its impressive lobby. It served as host for Saturday’s premiere wedding and Miners 1928 already has 30 weddings booked for the space.
Metzinger says he hopes the space will serve as more than just a wedding venue. His goal is to have it in use as often as possible, such as concerts and live music. It could also serve as a space for a brunch buffet in the future.
Many of the bank features – like its wood counters and marble tops – were repurposed in various areas of the venue space.
Renovating older properties is nothing new for Metzinger. He’s redone what’s now known as 900 Market St. in Orwigsburg and transformed that into high-end apartments. He said Miners 1928 is similar to that project in terms of size but required a different eye.
“This is light fixtures, flooring, furniture, and wallpaper. It was a lot more in-depth as far as the finishing touches,” he said.
Metzinger isn’t finished. He recently purchased neighboring properties on the same block, including the former Ramada Inn/Quality Hotel at the one-time Pomeroy’s department store. The plan is to renovate that before the end of the year and create another 65 hotel rooms, a sports bar, and additional meeting and venue spaces, all to be called Miners North.
It’s his hope that while his locations serve as host to multiple events happening at the same time and numerous overnight guests, those people go explore Pottsville at the same time, visiting and supporting other local businesses. That’s something that couldn’t happen recently in the city since it lacked appropriate accomodations.
“Those people would not have been to Pottsville if not for this property,” Metzinger said.
