Humid air moved into the coal region on Wednesday and it’s going to stick (literally) around for the next few days. On Thursday, heat joins the chat.
And with that combination comes the threat of strong or severe thunderstorms as well as the risk of heat-related illness among the most vulnerable members of our community.
National Weather Service believes there’s a slight risk of strong or severe storms Thursday afternoon. Damaging winds are the biggest risk from any storms that occur. Wind gusts could top 60 mph in storms. Large hail is possible and a tornado is not out of the question, NWS says.
With that hot and humid air in place, with high temps above 90 across Schuylkill County and the Heat Index value approaching 100, the risk of heat-related illness also increases.
These same risks will be in place on Friday with another hot, humid day in the forecast.

Chance of precipitation is 30%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.
Friday: Showers and possibly a thunderstorm after 2pm. High near 91. Calm wind becoming west around 5 mph in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.
Friday Night: Showers and possibly a thunderstorm before 8pm. Low around 61. Light northwest wind. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.
Saturday: Sunny, with a high near 87.
Saturday Night: Clear, with a low around 62.
