A 19-year-old Schuylkill County woman was killed early Saturday morning in a suspected DUI crash in Carbon County, according to State Police. Investigators allege the woman was riding on the lap of the driver when the vehicle veered off the road and rolled over.
Perla Decena Castillo, 19, of McAdoo, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash in the 50 block of Main St. in Banks Township, police say.
Police suspect the driver, 21-year-old Endy Rodriguez Sanchez, of Beaver Meadows, was driving under the influence.
Rodriguez Sanchez was driving a 2011 Honda CRV west on Main St. After negotiating a left curve, the vehicle began to lose control and crossed into the opposing lane of travel, police say. He attempted to counter-steer, which caused the vehicle to rotate clockwise, cross back over the westbound lane, and go onto the shoulder, police say.
The Honda then went down a small embankment, where its driver’s side struck several trees. The impact spun the vehicle counterclockwise before it rolled onto its driver’s side and came to a rest, a police report indicates.
Troopers determined Decena Castillo was sitting on Rodriguez Sanchez’s lap at the time of the crash. Following the rollover, she was trapped underneath the vehicle.
A second passenger, 28-year-old Francisco Heronimo, was sitting in the front right seat, police say.
Neither the driver nor the two passengers were using safety equipment, police say.
Rodriguez Sanchez and Heronimo both sustained suspected minor injuries and were transported to Lehigh Valley Hospital-Hazleton for treatment.
Multiple agencies assisted at the scene, including McAdoo Fire Co., Lehigh Valley Health Network-EMS Hazleton, Carbon County Fire Police, Fire Police from Schuylkill County, Paul’s Towing, and the Carbon County Coroner’s Office.
