Nora Lloyd, the Blue Mountain Elementary-East fifth grader and Schuylkill County’s top speller, has advanced to the third round of the Scripps National Spelling Bee.
The national competition got underway Tuesday morning at DAR Constitution Hall in Washington, DC. This year’s National Bee included 247 spellers.
A total of 80 spellers were eliminated in the first two rounds. Round 3 of the competition is a written test that begins at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday. The goal of the competition is to narrow the remaining field to about 100 spellers who will advance to the Quarterfinals on Wednesday.
In the first round of the Scripps National Spelling Bee, Lloyd correctly spelled ‘Teutonic’. The term means anything relating to the ancient Germanic tribes, the German people, or their culture.
Lloyd was one of 194 to advance to the second round. And she was one of 167 to advance to the written test in Round 3.
In Round 2, the vocabulary round of the competition, Lloyd correctly answered the question, “What does reign refer to?” by responding, “Royal authority”.
The Preliminary rounds of the competition aired today on Scripps Sports network (click or tap here to find out how to view that network). That’s the home for the Quarterfinals on Wednesday, from 8 a.m. until 1 p.m. The Semifinal round will air on ION from 8-10 p.m. on Wednesday, with the Finals set for 8-10 p.m. on Thursday.
