Schuylkill Community Action (SCA) will host a Contractor Outreach and Recruiting Event on Tuesday, April 7, from 5-7 p.m. at its primary service office located at 225 N. Centre Street, Pottsville.
This event is open to residential general contractors and specialty contractors, including electricians, plumbers, HVAC technicians, and roofers. SCA partners with contractors through the administration of several housing rehabilitation initiatives designed to improve housing conditions across Schuylkill County.
Schuylkill County is home to one of the oldest housing stocks in Pennsylvania. Preventing blight and extending the lifespan of homes is critical, and housing preservation plays a key role in achieving this goal. SCA administers multiple home rehabilitation programs focused on addressing failing systems, improving energy efficiency, and correcting health and safety hazards to ensure homes remain safe and livable for owner-occupants.
These programs provide homeowners with access to essential repairs that help preserve their homes for the long term. SCA currently operates several initiatives, including the Schuylkill County Whole-Home Repair Program, Asthma Remediation Home Rehabilitation Pilot Program, Senior and Disability Home Repair Program, and municipal partnership programs serving Pottsville, Minersville , West Penn Township, Pine Grove Township, Wayne Township, Schuylkill Haven, and Butler Township.
“There is a tremendous need for these types of programs in our community. Too often, homeowners lack the financial resources to address critical repairs, and these programs represent a vital opportunity to preserve housing,” said Dave Young, Chief Executive Officer of Schuylkill Community Action. “Many of our programs are currently over-subscribed, and we want to ensure we have a strong network of qualified contractors ready to complete this work. With some programs operating under tight timelines, it is essential that we fully utilize available funding and avoid returning resources to funders. Our goal is not only to meet current demand but to aggressively pursue additional funding opportunities to expand services for vulnerable residents across Schuylkill County.”
“Contractors play an essential role in driving community development and economic stability.” said Andrea Slotterback, Director of Housing and Community Development of Schuylkill Community Action. “Local contractors have a vested interest in maintaining the community they live, work, and raise families. This connection encourages them to contribute to projects that truly benefit residents such as our housing rehabilitation programs. Their success becomes the community’s success, inspiring local pride and cooperation. Local contractors are the backbone of community resilience and progress which fosters stronger, more connected, and more sustainable communities.”
Contractors attending the event will have the opportunity to learn more about SCA’s programs, the bidding and procurement process, and how to become an approved contractor. Staff will be available to answer questions and provide guidance on how to get involved.
