Pine Grove Powers Past Trinity; Lady Vikings, Spartans, Dawgs, Toppers Advance in PIAA Playoffs

5 of 6 Schuylkill County teams advance to quarterfinals

Callee Leffler finished a triple shy of the cycle and paced the Pine Grove Area offense in a 7-2 defeat of Trinity in the First Round of the PIAA Class 3A softball playoffs Monday evening.

The junior center fielder capped off a big day at the plate in the sixth inning when she sent an opposite-field shot over the fence in left-center field to pad the Lady Cardinals lead over the Shamrocks.

Leffler finished the day 3-for-4 at the plate with 3 runs scored and 2 RBI.

Pine Grove Area got all the runs it would need in the third inning Monday.

Lily Flynn got it started when she tripled to the center field fence. She scored on a fielding error, one of two from Trinity in the inning. All three Lady cards runs in the third inning were unearned.

The Lady Cards tacked on a pair of runs in the fifth inning when Leffler doubled to left field and scored on a Madison Shiffer triple. Addison Zimmerman brought her home with a single up the middle in the next at-bat.

Next up for Pine Grove Area is a quarterfinals date with Kutztown Area on Thursday.

PIAA Softball Scoreboard

  • Class 1A: Holy Cross 3, Tri-Valley 2
  • Class 2A: Williams Valley 3, Halifax Area 0

Class 4A: North Schuylkill 16, Conwell Egan Catholic 13

Class 2A Baseball: Tri-Valley 6, Holy Redeemer 5

Tri-Valley scored four runs in the seventh inning and held on for a 6-5 win over Holy Redeemer in the First Round of the PIAA Class 2A baseball playoffs.

Gavin Klock’s two-RBI single in the top half of the frame sparked the offense. Peyton Schley and Gavin Scheib also crossed in the seventh, giving the Dawgs a 6-3 lead.

Braeden Doyle picked up the win for Tri-Valley, going three innings in relief of Klock.

Tri-Valley will face District 6 champs Mount Union in the quarterfinals on Thursday.

Class 1A Baseball: Nativity BVM 7, Dock Mennonite 6

The Hilltoppers scored five runs in the fourth inning and held on to defeat Dock Mennonite in the First Round of the PIAA Class 1A baseball playoffs.

Stephen Karinch drove in two runs with a single in that fourth inning. A passed ball and a balk with the bases loaded also allowed in runs for Nativity in that inning.

Nick Wagner threw 6 innings and got a hard-earned victory for the Toppers. He allowed six runs on nine hits. Karinch earned the save after walking one and giving up a single in the seventh. 

Next up for Nativity is a quarterfinals matchup with MMI Preparatory School on Thursday.
