Four people have applied to become Pottsville’s next and interim Mayor.
City Council is likely to decide who will be the next Mayor on Wednesday evening.
Two of the applicants are running for the office in November: current City Councilman Andy Wollyung and his Republican challenger, Tom Smith.
City Councilman William Messaros and LGBTQ+ advocate Mikaela Gavaletz have also applied.
It’ll require a majority vote of council members to approve the appointment of a new Mayor for Pottsville.
The Mayor’s office was vacated earlier this month when Mark Atkinson abruptly resigned from office, citing health reasons. He was appointed late last year to fill the unexpired term of Dave Clews, who also resigned as Mayor due to health reasons.
City Council meets Wednesday at 6:30 p.m.
During this special session, council also plans to approve a second reading and ratify the City’s amended stray cat ordinance.
