Police say a Schuylkill County woman jumped off a bridge into the Schuylkill River following a crash on Route 61 last week.
According to information from State Police-Schuylkill Haven, the crash happened at about 3 p.m. on April 25 on the highway near the Appalachian National Scenic Trail in Port Clinton.
At that time and place, State Troopers from the Schuylkill Haven and Hamburg barracks responded to a call of a motor vehicle crash and learned that the driver – identified only as a 27-year-old woman from Tamaqua – had fled the scene.
Police say the woman’s vehicle hit a concrete shoulder of the road and became wedged between the shoulder and the barriers on the southbound shoulder.
Bystanders helped get the woman from her vehicle, police say. When they did that, the Tamaqua woman jumped off the bridge and into the Schuylkill River below.
The Tamaqua woman was rescued from the river and taken to Lehigh Valley Hospital-Cedar Crest for treatment of injuries.
State Police-Schuylkill Haven say they have begun an investigation into a possible DUI charge against the Tamaqua woman.
Fire crews from Auburn, Deer Lake-West Brunswick Township, New RInggold, and Port Clinton all responded to the scene along with dive teams from Schuylkill Haven and Shoemakersville, Berks County. Reading & Northern Railroad Police also responded to the scene.
