STC Adult Education to Launch Evening Practical Nursing Program in 2025

Evening classes designed for working adults

Schuylkill Technology Center (STC) Adult Education Center will introduce an Adult Evening Practical Nursing Program beginning March 10, providing expanded access to nursing education for working adults.

STC has trained Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) since 1966, with its 2024 graduates achieving a 100% pass rate on the NCLEX examination, which is required for a license in Pennsylvania.

STC’s LPN program has operated solely as a daytime program in recent years, limiting participation for individuals with daytime work commitments. The decision to reinstate evening classes followed a visit to STC North Campus by State Rep. Joanne Stehr (R-107), an alumnus of the STC Adult Evening Practical Nursing Program.

Stehr strongly encouraged STC “to reinstate the evening classes to make the education more accessible to individuals who need to continue working during the day while taking classes at night.”

The two-year evening program will run from 4-9 p.m., three evenings per week. The schedule will later transition to one evening per week with clinical hours every other weekend at an affiliated clinical partner.

“(Stehr’s) comment reignited STC staff to begin working with the PA State Board of Nursing to resume the evening LPN Classes,” STC Director of Career and Technical Education Shannon Brennan says.

“This delivery model should afford participants the time to manage both school and work,” Program Coordinator Kim O’Neill says.

Licensed Practical Nursing is on the Luzerne Schuylkill High Priority Occupation List, with a projected 2% growth over the next five years and a median annual salary of $56,650, STC says.

Pre-enrollment testing is required for admission. The last testing date for the entrance examination is Feb. 25.

Interested individuals can apply online at STC Adult Education or call (570) 874-1412 for more information.
