Winter starts this Saturday at 3:21 a.m. and this weekend, you’ll have ample reminders that it is, indeed, winter.
The new season will be ushered in with some bitterly cold temperatures on Saturday and Sunday. It won’t exactly be balmy on Monday, either.
It all begins on Friday, the last day of Fall, when we can expect to see a little snowfall here in Schuylkill County. Snow is likely to begin falling after 10 a.m. on Friday. Nothing more than an inch of accumulation is expected.
Temperatures are expected to be in the low 30s during the day on Friday with a low temp of about 23 degrees on Friday night, with some lingering snow showers.
Those temps are going to feel absolutely tropical (OK, maybe that’s a bit of a stretch) compared to what’s ahead.
The forecast for Schuylkill County on Saturday, the first day of winter calls for high temperatures in the mid-20s. However, a steady wind of 11 mph is expected with gusts up to 25 mph. That’s cold and windy enough to put the Wind Chill Factor in the upper single digits or low teens during the day.
Saturday’s low temperature should dip to just above 10 degrees. But when you factor in similar winds, which are expected Saturday night, that Wind Chill Factor drops to just below or just above 0.
Winds should die down by Sunday but there will be bitter cold temperatures in place for the final day of the weekend, the last shopping weekend before Christmas. The forecasted high temp for Schuylkill County on Sunday is in the low 20s. The low temp will be about 8 degrees.
Things start to rebound a little bit on Monday with a high temp of 27 and a low of 17.
The holiday forecast is a bit of a mess at the moment.
Right now, National Weather Service is calling for a chance of snow on Christmas Eve with a high and low temp hovering near the freezing mark.
On Christmas Day, a high temp of 37 is expected with a 30% chance of rain. That rain could turn to some snow showers on Christmas night – also the first night of Hanukkah – when temps are expected to drop below the freezing mark.
