Blueberry Season Gives Locals a Chance to Pick Their Own

Pick-your-own blueberries are now available at Harding’s Farm Market along Route 443, just outside Orwigsburg.

Peter Harding, of Harding's Farm Market, tends to a blueberry bush at the family farm. Pick-your-own blueberry season is now and runs for about a month.

It’s blueberry season here in Schuylkill County.

And if you want the absolute freshest blueberries you can possibly get, you’ll definitely want to pick your own.

Harding’s Farm Market, along Route 443 just outside Orwigsburg, is one place where Schuylkill County residents can come pick their own blueberries.

The season started on Friday and runs for about a month, according to Peter Harding, who was picking a row of blueberry bushes at the end of a busy day on Tuesday.

The Harding farm features just shy of 2 acres of blueberries. That’s more than 900 bushes. One row of berry bushes is picked per day.

“We need more pickers,” Harding says.

When the day started on Tuesday, the parking lot at the family farm stand was jam-packed. Nicer weather is great for picking blueberries.

Even if you don’t feel like picking your own blueberries, Harding’s does offer quarts of pre-picked berries, too.

This year’s crop of blueberries should be excellent. The pint we walked away with was almost gone during the ride home 😏. A combination of sun, dry air and a bit of rain provide the perfect environment for some tasty berries.

Pick-your-own blueberries at Harding’s is open Tuesday-Friday, from 8 a.m. until 6 p.m., Saturdays from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m., and on Sundays from 1-4 p.m.
