Pottsville native Travis Blankenhorn is the Rochester Red Wings 2023 Team MVP.
The team announced that honor in social media posts on Sunday. The Washington Nationals Triple-A affiliate’s season is about to come to a close, with them missing out on the playoffs.
However, that didn’t prevent Blankenhorn from putting up solid statistics for the Red Wings all season long. His numbers were good enough to earn promotion to the Nationals on September 1.
With the Red Wings in 2023, his first year in the Nationals organization, Blankenhorn led the International League team in home runs (23) and RBI (75), numbers that current Red Wings players aren’t likely to match.
He also leads the team in runs scored (67) and doubles (27). He collected 103 hits in 108 games played for the Red Wings in 2023, hitting for a .262 average.
In his first game with the Nationals, Blankenhorn smashed a home run, his second-career MLB homer.
After starting in left field for most games since his call up to the Nationals, Blankenhorn has seen his playing time diminish. CBS Sports is reporting the Nationals prefer another of his Red Wings teammates this year, Jake Alu, as the starting left fielder when the team is facing a left-handed pitcher.
