Schuylkill County Schools Rank Low in Latest National Ratings

Where does your school rank in the county, state, and nationally?

US News & World Report recently released its annual rankings of all public high schools nationwide.

Those rankings assessed myriad metrics to arrive at their final scores, which were used to rate schools from top to bottom.

Needless to say, the high schools in Schuylkill County did not rank near the top nationally. In fact, the highest-ranked high school in Schuylkill County was only ranked 6,010th nationally.

They didn’t exactly rank very highly among the 665 Pennsylvania high schools either. The highest school here among Pennsylvania schools was 253rd. And most finished in the bottom half among other schools in the state.

How Does US News & World Report Rank Schools?

U.S. News & World Report worked with RTI International, a research company, to do determine its ratings on each school. Here’s how they decided the rankings:

  • Counting the Schools: They looked at almost 25,000 high schools. But they only ranked about 17,680. They chose these schools based on how many students were in 12th grade and other factors.
  • What They Measured: They used six factors to score each school. Each factor was given a certain weight or importance. Schools got scores between 0 and 100 based on how they did in these six areas:
    1. College Readiness (30% weight): They checked how many 12th graders took and passed big exams like AP or IB.
    2. College Curriculum Breadth (10% weight): They looked at how many different subjects the students took and passed in those big exams.
    3. State Assessment Proficiency (20% weight): They looked at how well students did in state tests on subjects like math, reading, and science.
    4. State Assessment Performance (20% weight): They compared the school’s test scores with what they expected based on the school’s student backgrounds.
    5. Performance of Underserved Students (10% weight): They checked how well Black, Hispanic, and low-income students did in state tests.
    6. Graduation Rate (10% weight): They looked at how many students who started in 9th grade graduated 4 years later.
  • Changes This Year: The COVID-19 pandemic changed a lot of things. Some tests in 2020-2021 weren’t taken or had few students taking them because of the pandemic. So, U.S. News used data from 2018-2019 in some cases. They made sure to compare schools fairly based on the data they had.
  • How Schools Were Ranked: After getting scores for each factor, they added them up for a total score between 0 and 100. The schools with higher scores were ranked better.
