Helen M. Moyer, 91 – Family, Gardening, Community Brought Her Happiness

Helen M. Moyer, 91, of Schuylkill Haven, passed away peacefully with her family surrounding her on Tuesday, June 6th, at Geisinger St. Luke’s Hospital, Orwigsburg.

Born in Wayne Township on May 11, 1932, she was a daughter of the late Charles & Alveria (Zeigler) Frantz.

The recipe to Helen’s happiness was family, gardening, and giving to her community.

Helen was the widow of Ernest Loy Moyer, her beloved husband of 60 years; who passed away, August 2, 2013. She was a devoted mother to her daughter, Cheryl L., wife of Richard Thomas, Schuylkill Haven; and loving Nanna to three grandchildren, Scott R. Thomas & wife Amanda, Kutztown, Eric R. Thomas & wife Julianna, and Kate J. Thomas & fiancee, Ian Schreffler, all of Bethlehem. She was the loving Great-Nanna to Theodore, & Parker Thomas, and dear sister to Jean Greenawalt, Friedensburg.

In addition to her husband and parents, she is also preceded in death by her daughter, Judith Moyer.

Helen was a 1950 graduate of Cressona High School; and had been an active and passionate member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, Friedensburg.

She was the developer and former owner of the Friedensburg Country Store & Restaurant. She had also worked as a designer for Freed’s Flowers, Schuylkill Haven.

A master gardener, Helen was the former president and a member for more than 50 years of the South Schuylkill Gardening Club. Each year the club awards one winner the “Helen Moyer Curb Appeal-Spirit of Beauty” award in her honor. She was one of the founding organizers of the Frog Hollow Environmental Education Center, Friedensburg; and was dedicated to its maintenance and upkeep.

Helen also belonged to the Garden Club Federation of Pennsylvania, and the National Garden Club Federation.

Assisting in many volunteer efforts, Helen was a member of the Friedensburg Fire Company, as well as the Ladies Auxiliary. Helen often served as the cashier for the fire company’s mock lobster dinners.

A member of the Order of the Eastern Star-Cressona Chapter, Helen held several officer positions, including past Worthy Matron, throughout her life.

A talented cook and baker, Helen will be remembered for her delicious apple pie, caramel bread, and buttercream candy.

A Celebration of Life Funeral Service will be held at Geschwindt Stabingas Ebling Funeral Home, Inc., Schuylkill Haven at 10:30 AM on Friday. A viewing will be held from 9 AM until the time of service.

Interment at St. John’s Union Cemetery, Friedensburg, will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers Helen’s family would prefer contributions in her memory to St. John Lutheran Church, Box 86, Friedensburg, PA 17933, South Schuylkill Gardening Club, C/O Kaye Moyer, 754 Mountain Rd., Pine Grove 17963, or to your favorite animal shelter or rescue.
