A Schuylkill County man was arrested and charged with multiple offenses, including arson, after allegedly setting fire to mattresses leaning against a porch in Shenandoah, resulting in significant property damage.
The incident occurred at approximately 8 p.m. on May 11, 2023, at a residence on 11 N. West St.
According to Shenandoah Police, Lieutenant Travis Bowman and Patrolman Hugh Clinton were first on the scene, where they discovered a mattress fire had spread to a porch roof, causing substantial damage to the property.
Surveillance footage from the scene allowed law enforcement officials to identify the suspect as John Mayeresky of 151 W. Washington St.
Upon arriving at Mayeresky’s residence, officers noted that he was wearing clothing that matched the person seen in the surveillance video. Mayeresky was taken into custody without incident, police say.
Following his arrest, Mayeresky was arraigned by District Judge Edward Tarantelli. The charges leveled against Mayeresky include felony arson, felony reckless burning, felony risking a catastrophe, recklessly endangering another person, disorderly conduct, and criminal mischief.
Unable to post the set $75,000 straight cash bail, Mayeresky remains at Schuylkill County Prison. He’s due in court for a preliminary hearing on these charges on May 25 before District Judge Anthony Kilker.
