Pennsylvania’s Dept. of Health reported a new record number of positive COVID-19 cases in Schuylkill County on New Year’s Day.
According to information posted to the Pennsylvania COVID-19 Dashboard, there were 323 positive cases of the coronavirus reported on Jan. 1. The previous high of 176 cases was reported on Dec. 3, 2020.
On Jan. 2, the state Dept. of Health reported 101 new cases of COVID-19 in Schuylkill County.
New Record for COVID Cases in Schuylkill County Reported on New Year’s Day
The record number of cases reported in Schuylkill County drives up the total number of cases reported since the start of the pandemic back in March 2020. To date, there have been 7,829 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Schuylkill County and another 592 probable cases.
A total of 33,598 people have tested negative for the virus in Schuylkill County.
The death toll attributed to COVID-19 in Schuylkill County is now at 250.
Most of the cases locally are reported in the 17901 ZIP Code (Pottsville), where there have been 1,389 positives since the start of the pandemic. There are another 85 probable cases here.
The Schuylkill Haven ZIP Code (17972) is second-highest in the area with 749 confirmed cases and 37 probable cases. Tamaqua (18252) is third-highest with 606 confirmed cases cumulatively and another 27 probable cases.
According to the state’s COVID-19 Early Warning Monitoring System Dashboard, Schuylkill County has the 4th highest PCR test positivity rate at 25.5%.
A mobile testing site recently concluded operations in Mar Lin on Dec. 31 so that may have contributed to the higher than normal case total on New Year’s Day.

COVID Hospitalizations in Schuylkill County
The Dept. of Health is also reporting that 66 people are in Schuylkill County hospitals being treated for COVID-19 complications. A total of 9 adult patients are in intensive care and 1 person is on a ventilator.
