Shortcuts are bred out of familiarity. A head nod or shake, a wave of the hand, and someone will know exactly what you mean. In Pennsylvania, there is a similar phenomenon in beer. If you utter the word “lager” you’ll likely have someone serve you a Yuengling Traditional Lager.
D.G. Yuengling & Son is America’s oldest operating brewing company. It has been producing beer since 1829 and its signature product, Yuengling Traditional Lager, is in some ways an amber-colored legend.
When someone from Pennsylvania, New Jersey or Delaware leaves the area and goes to a local bar, they may feel a sense of comfort when they remain on the East Coast and can still find their preferred brand of lager, but if you travel west beyond Kentucky or Tennessee, and attempt to order “lager” someone might stare at you waiting for you to finish, or present you with a brand more known for commercials than taste.
However, that could soon change.
Earlier this year, Yuengling Brewery announced a partnership with MillerCoors that will make Lager and other Yuengling brews available in up to 47 states. (READ: Yuengling Partners with MolsonCoors in Westward Expansion)
With cases shipped in care packages to out-of-staters, and newly minted residents being dragged to the bar for their inaugural draft, Yuengling Traditional Lager is long overdue for a review. Is the beer that we’ve held up as the amber standard all we think it is, or have we fallen into a regional bias, bitterly claiming it’s better because it’s ours?
Yuengling Lager Review
Here’s our review of Yuengling Traditional Lager:
Look
Yuengling Traditional Lager almost doesn’t need to be described. The signature green bottle with the classic wrap and eagle insignia is as familiar as the uncle holding one at every family event. He might not use a pint glass but we will. Pouring the beer reveals its bright amber shine and a bright white head, that will disappear quickly.
Smell
The smell of caramel wafts through when you bring the beer towards your nose, with a slight floral or apple note as well. That is your first hint of the roasted caramel malts that give Yuengling that character and body we’ve become so familiar with. The floral or apple notes reveal the hops used, Cascade and Cluster, adding to but never overpowering the beer.
Taste
A deep sip brings the malty base to the forefront. The notes from the smell of caramel, apple, and floral remain but are subtle and contribute to the overall balance of the drink. At 4.5% ABV, you won’t get knocked around as you work your way through this beer, or the next one. In addition to being relatively low in ABV at 140 calories, it is also not going to be overly filling. This is not a beer that will double as a meal replacement, but rather one that will complement some hot wings, steak, or anything friend.
The historic origins of this beer are evident. The traditional amber style stands out among the typical lager styles, especially those of the mass-produced variety. This also is the complex part of Yuengling lager. Yuengling is technically America’s oldest craft brewery, and in 2018 was the largest.
Perhaps this is why Pennsylvania has become such a fantastic location for craft beer. They had America’s first craft brewery, and their pallets are tuned to Yuengling as their lager of choice. It may not be able to reach the levels of a small craft lager from the tap down the street, but if you’re grabbing a quick beer out, or at the liquor store you’d do well to pick this up. If you’re already a fan of Sam Adams Boston Lager, Brooklyn Lager, or Great Lakes Elliot Ness then you’ll appreciate a Yuengling Traditional Lager just as much.
Price
If you’re fortunate to live close to the home of Yuengling Brewery, you can typically pick up a six-pack of cans or bottles for between $5-7. That’s a great price for a beer that separates itself from other mass-produced lagers.
Summary
Yuengling Traditional Lager is the gatekeeper of craft beer and remains a quality product and will remain ubiquitous for a lager in the region. This beer earns an overall score of 3.8 out of 5.
