North Schuylkill School District suspended activity in one of its Fall sports after a student tested positive for COVID-19. That decision was made public on Wednesday.
The school hasn’t publicly divulged which Fall sport has stopped and it’s not disclosing the name of the student.
North Schuylkill Student Tests Positive for COVID-19 – Sport Suspended, Coaches and Players Quarantined
In a statement released to The Canary, North Schuylkill Superintendent Dr. Robert Ackell says, “The North Schuylkill School District did have one student athlete test positive for COVID-19.”
Right now, the school is following its plan for Resocialization of Sports developed over the summer at the order of the Pennsylvania Dept. of Health. Each local school district was required to create one of these plans and update them based on any new orders or mandates from the DOH.
Following the protocol set in that plan, North Schuylkill is halting all activity in the sport in which the student-athlete was involved.
“The Athletic Department ceased operations for 2 weeks of the program the athlete was directly involved with,” Ackell says.
Additionally, the school is taking steps to mitigate any potential spread of the illness to others, especially those directly involved with that sport.
“Any other student athletes including coaches who were in close contact with the positive athlete must quarantine for 14 days,” the Superintendent adds. “The District has been in contact with the Pennsylvania Department of Health and St. Luke’s Health Network.”
North Schuylkill Resocialization of Sports Plan
Part of North Schuylkill’s Resocialization of Sports Plan aims to keep players, coaches, and staff safe from potential exposure to the viral infection that’s essentially brought normal life to a halt here.
Anyone involved with a sport reportedly receives a temperature screening and asks a serious of questions regarding their current condition.
People listed as non-essential staff are not permitted at workouts or practices. As part of this plan, that also includes parents in addition to random spectators and visitors. Team workouts with other groups not associated with the school are prohibited.
The school requires face masks be worn when a student-athlete is not either practicing or competing in their sports.
